theCorporal issue number 1 - Revolution October 31, 2007
Welcome to the first issue of theCorporal. Finally. This project has been many months in the making, and would certainly not have been possible without the hard work and support of many folks. First let me thank Ben Wolfson. His were the first ears to ever hear of this idea, before it even had a name. Were it not for his enthusiasm and willing participation in the creation of this work, it would undoubtedly never have reached this point. Furthermore, he has been an invaluable influence on my creative life. I dare say that I should not be so happy a person if he had not come into my life at just the right moment. Many thanks are also due to the other contributors. In no particular order: Matthew Martell, a friend from many many miles away, is always a reliable source of information and inspiration in the fields of music, writing, thinking, living, loving. A drink to you, Matthew, and as you aren't a drinking man, a second drink in your stead. Kevin Harwell has been one of the most enthusiastic supporters of this project, and I thank him so. I hope that future issues of theCorporal feature further glimpses into the many sides of his artistry and revolutionary spirit. A stiff one to Kevin, who I know will join me. My father, Bert Scalia, is of course owed much of my gratitude. I can say quite literally that none of this would be happening were it not for him. He gave me my life, and an inquisitive mind to go along with it. His voice appears not only in the article he submitted for this issue, but in my own writing as well, for he is so much a part of the person I have become. A long drink to he who first taught me to drink- to you, Dad. Shane Horn joined this team most recently of all the contributors, and yet, as has been the case with our friendship, it's as if he's always been here. A hearty thanks to Shane for reminding me of my passion for the issues of the day, for being a positive influence, and for setting such a great example of motivation and hard work, without which I may never have completed this project. It could be nothing but a plum wine and tonic to you, Shane. Finally, I want to thank Jeremiah Johnson. Not strictly a contributor, he was a wonderful source for my own writing, and for all kinds of practical technological advice. Thank you for your time, and for the smokes. One last drink for Jeremiah. Now I'm drunk. Thank you. I love you all. And now, without further ado, let's get into this. The topic of this issue is, generally, revolution. That is simply to say that revolution was to serve as at least part of the inspiration for any submission. We'll begin with the most literal interpretation of that topic- an article about revolution itself and its place, or not, in present-day America. page2 - "A New American Revolution: Is It Our Destiny?" Next, let's get literate. page3 - "These Are Strange Times to Be a Jew" We are also oh so musical. In keeping with that musical vein... page5 - "For a Hand-Rolled Cigarette" Time to think about another place. page6 - "A Hundred and Twenty in the Shade" How about some poetry? page7 - "The Damage We've Done" Something a little more... visual. page9 - the art of Kevin Harwell Fiction time. |
